On 1st April, 1915, the 2nd East Kent (Buffs) battalion of 85 Brigade, 28th Division left their billets at Dickebusch and moved into trenches at St Eloi, just to the south of Ypres where they remained until relieved on 3rd April. While here they were heavily bombarded by howitzers and trench mortars from the Mound, a nearby enemy position resulting in casualties for the battalion including James Brown who was killed on 3rd April.
